RUBY "RED" SUNRISE
DISASTER CAT
About
NAME Ruby "Red" Sunrise AGE 24 GENDER Male SEXUALITY Bisexual DOW/DOM JOBS Machinist • Gunbreaker • Sage DOL/DOH JOBS Culinarian

Ruby "Red" Sunrise was born on the outskirts of Thanalan, abandoned on the steps of Ul'dah, and raised by a family of Roegadyn on the bright shores of Limsa Lominsa. He had a warm and loving upbrining that was struck by tragedy when he was seventeen: Splendid Vista, the family matriarch, was killed in the crossfire between two rival pirate gangs, and Red has been trying to find a way both to process the loss and support his family ever since.

He's loud, playful, extremely tactile, as well as open with his affection, and he is a strong believer in doing whatever it takes to prevent pain and injustices. As such, he takes caring for all who might need to lean on him for support incredibly seriously, although sometimes (a lot of the time in fact) this means bringing out the big guns — quite literally!

In this vein: since exchanging his tomes for the tools of a machinist Red has truly come into his own. Where the secrets of the arcane are still somewhat obscure to him the enginering technology of firearms just makes sense, and he's become an adept repairman and weapons designer in his time spent under Stephanivien and Rostnsthal's tutelage. Privately, he's quite taken by the idea of creating the biggest boom, however that's a vanity project that he only works on when there's nothing more important for him to be doing.

One day, though. It'll be the biggest boom of all.

Red is a warm-hearted, big-mouthed Miqo'te who has firm ideas of what's right and what's wrong, however he's also the type to employ slightly underhand tactics in the name of what he'd call "the greater good". He likely has his upbringing in Limsa Lominsa to thank for his flexible take on the rules: Red has seen firsthand what poverty, pirates, and gang rivalry can do, and he'd never begrudge someone a stolen loaf or an ill-gotten pair of shoes. He'd be far more likely to help cause a distraction than he would to turn in someone committing a petty crime, especially when children are involved, and in the event that they were caught? He'd be the first to open his purse and offer up the gil.

In this way he can be quite free with his money, his time, and his possessions: he's an extremely generous person — perhaps bafflingly so — who wouldn't think twice about helping someone in need, and before he became an adventurer he'd go out of his way to check in on any friends and neighbours who needed a little extra help. By Red's reckoning helping one's elderly neighbours is just as important as returning Ifrit to the aether, and is something his friends will quickly come to learn he'd never compromise. It's this sense of duty to help that set him on the path of the Warrior of Light in the first place: Red could never stand by and see people used, harmed, or cast aside, and he would do whatever it takes to assist those in need.

He is, however, somewhat chaotic in his good deeds, which means he can sometimes come across as more of a hindrance than he can a help. Perpetually late and often forgetful, Red will make commitments with the best of intentions only to end up in the midst of a near collision on chocobo-back as he tries to get to an engagement on time. There have also been occasions where he's managed to muddle up what people would ask of him: six bat fangs? He hopes that six wolf fangs will do for the time being — just give him a few more hours to go and sort out the order.

One of the downsides to his charitable nature is that Red can be quite easily taken advantage of. His natural inclination to look for the best in people means that he often fails to see the worst, and has on more than one occasion ended up in serious peril due to a misdjdgement of character. The Teledji Adeledji disaster was a prime example of that: a teachable moment, to be sure, which shook him to his core, however he's working hard not to let it colour the way he interacts with people going forwards.

He's young and silly enough that he can still be quite impulsive, and he has a fondness of pastimes that will get his blood pumping a little quicker. While he isn't an avid gambler he thoroughly enjoys a night out at the Gold Saucer: Triple Triad isn't something he's good at but it's a game he loves to play, and he's happy to lose a little gil for the sake of a fun evening. He can also be quite competitive — the result of growing up the youngest of four, probably — and he will turn the most mundane of activities into a competition if there's a way someone could be considered the winner.

Some people might find that endearing. Others, however, might be more interested in getting him to shut the heck up.

That impulsiveness occasionally manifests in ways beyond the Saucer. These days he's joined at the hip to a goobbue sprout that he befriended in Raincatcher Gully: Red has no idea whether they're male or female and simply refers to them as "Daisy", and insists on their accompanying him on all his many and varied adventures. He's also been known to spend ridiculous amounts of money on outfits for his Grand Company-issued chocobo, Buster, and flat-out rejects the idea that his feathered friend is indifferent to his barding.

(He likes the Leviathan outfit best, apparently.)

He is, however, extremely detail-oriented and caring when it comes to his hobbies. Red has a great love of cooking that he likes to share with the people he cares about, and he likes travelling to new places, sampling new cuisines, and learning new techniques as he goes. He also spends a lot of time and energy on his pursuits as a machinist: when he's not entertaining his friends, saving the world(s), or rescuing old ladies' cats from trees, he can usually be found surrounded by heaps of spare parts while he makes adjustments to the latest weapon in his collection. He is extremely dedicated to these pursuits — indeed, he finds it difficult to maintain interest in that which doesn't absorb him entirely — and one day, when the fighting is over, he hopes to settle down and really make something of them.

History

Twenty-four years ago a kitten was born to a Miqo'te Seeker mother who, both too young and too reckless to humour the idea of raising a child herself, stole away from her tribe in the dead of night and left him atop Ul'dah's Steps of Thal. As the pale haze of dawn bled into morning he was discovered by a Roegadyn couple: Bracing Chill and Splendid Vista were finailizing a relocation that would take their family to the port city of Limsa Lominsa, and when it became evident that the kitten had been abandoned there was no question about not taking him in.

Ruby Sunrise, they named him, after the break of the scarlet dawn in which they found him — and by the Gods if he hasn't been an exhuberant ray of sunshine in their lives ever since.

Growing up as part of a Roegadyn family was boistrous, to say the least. Ruby (Red, to his friends) was raised with two older brothers and an older sister, and his childhood was a riot of laughter with no small amount of time given over to pranks, dares, and sibling rivalries. Although they were far from wealthy — Bracing Chill took a post with the Culinarian's Guild, where Splendid Vista would take on work as it came from pirate crews that would sail in to port — they made enough that none of the children ever went without.

He was seventeen when his mother was fatally wounded in a rivalry gone sour. It was a classic, heart-breaking example of being in the wrong place at the wrong time: Splendid Vista had been delivering an order to the Raging Fangs when, seemingly out of nowhere, they were overrun by the Cleavers, who killed a handful of the Fangs and gave her a dagger to the gut for her trouble defending them. That day broke their family in a way that has never fully healed: Bracing Chill was a different man after the untimely death of his wife, his smiles hollow and his laughter never quite managing to reach his eyes.

In the aftermath, Red had never felt more helpless. Determined to protect his family from more heartache — to protect anyone from coming to harm like that on his watch — Red took himself to Limsa's Arcanist's Guild in an effort to learn their ways of scholarly healing. The problem was that Red just wasn't very good at books, magicks, and the finer intricacies of arcana; he took to it slowly, struggled with the amount of research required of him — but in the times when he could help? He found that people were often inclined to give him a little gil for his troubles. While he initially thought to refuse it — it was never about the profit, after all — it became apparent that for all his struggles he had the makings of a fine adventurer.

... That was a profession, wasn't it? A way he could hone his skills while helping to support his father? Red began to take on more work, hunting monsters and offering what little healing he could, until a chance meeting with a Scion of the Seventh Dawn would change his life forever.
